Privacy Policy
Last updated: 28 September 2026
GreenLight Theory ("we", "us") is a driving theory test app that helps learners in English, Somali and Arabic. This policy explains what information the app uses, why, who helps us provide the service, and the choices and rights you have.
In short: you don't need to give us your name or email to use the app. We use your learning progress and your questions to Drivo to teach you. We never sell your data and we don't show ads. You can delete your account and data at any time from Settings → Delete Account.
1. Who we are
GreenLight Theory is provided by Jamal Aidid, trading as GreenLight Theory, an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) based in the United Kingdom. We are the data controller for the information described in this policy.
Contact: support@greenlighttheory.co.uk
2. Information we use
| Information | What it is | Why we use it |
|---|---|---|
| Account ID | A random identifier created when you first open the app (anonymous sign-in). It does not contain your name or email. | To keep your progress linked to your device and keep the service secure. |
| Display name | The username you choose (optional), shown on leaderboards and challenges. | Leaderboards, friend challenges and battles. |
| Learning progress | Answers, scores, XP, weak topics, lesson progress and mock test results. | To track your progress and personalise practice and Drivo's teaching. |
| Messages to Drivo | Questions you type or speak to Drivo, and Drivo's answers. | To answer your questions, remember what you're working on, and improve answer quality (see section 4). |
| Voice input | If you use the microphone, your device's speech recognition turns your speech into text. | So you can ask Drivo questions by voice. Only the resulting text is sent to us. |
| Notification token | A device token for push notifications, if you allow notifications. | Challenge and battle notifications. |
| Technical and security data | Usage counts, error logs, and request limits linked to your account ID. | To keep the service reliable, prevent abuse and control costs. |
We do not collect your contacts, photos, location or advertising identifiers.
3. Who helps us provide the service
We use trusted providers who process data on our behalf, under contracts that require them to protect it:
- Google Firebase: sign-in, database, secure server functions and notifications.
- Supabase: database for Drivo's learning memory, the DVSA knowledge search and cached audio.
- Anthropic: the AI model that writes Drivo's answers in English and Arabic.
- OpenAI: search technology that finds the relevant DVSA material, and Drivo's English voice.
- ElevenLabs: Drivo's Arabic voice.
- Hugging Face: hosting for Drivo's Somali voice engine.
- Resend: sends our website waitlist emails (the welcome email and launch updates).
- Apple and Google: app distribution, and payments if you subscribe (we never see your card details).
Only the information each provider needs is shared with it. For example, voice services receive the text to be spoken, not your account details.
4. Drivo, our AI tutor
Drivo uses artificial intelligence. Its English and Arabic answers are written by an AI model using the DVSA revision question bank; Somali answers use our reviewed DVSA Somali content. Drivo can make mistakes. Always check the Highway Code.
To improve accuracy, questions asked to Drivo and its answers may be saved, without your account ID, for review by our qualified driving instructor. Reviewed answers may be reused for other learners who ask the same question. Please don't include personal information in your questions.
5. Our legal reasons (lawful bases)
- Contract: to provide the app and its features you choose to use.
- Legitimate interests: to keep the service secure, prevent abuse, control costs and improve accuracy.
- Consent: for notifications and microphone access, which you can turn off at any time in your device settings.
6. Where your data is stored
Our providers store and process data in the UK, the European Union and the United States. Where data leaves the UK, it is protected by approved safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or equivalent contractual protections.
7. How long we keep it
We keep your account data until you delete your account. Security and error logs are kept for short periods, normally no longer than 30 days. Reviewed Drivo answers are not linked to you and may be kept to help other learners.
8. Deleting your account
You can delete your account and data at any time in the app: Settings → Delete Account. This permanently removes your account, progress, Drivo memory, challenges, notifications and leaderboard entries. If you no longer have the app, see how to request deletion.
9. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to access, correct or delete your data, object to or restrict how we use it, and receive a copy of it. Email support@greenlighttheory.co.uk and we'll respond within one month. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Our website
Launch waitlist
If you join our waitlist on greenlighttheory.co.uk, we store your email address, send you a welcome email, and tell you when GreenLight Theory launches. We use it only for that, we never share or sell it, and we delete the list once it's no longer needed after launch. You can unsubscribe or ask us to remove your email at any time: email support@greenlighttheory.co.uk. Lawful basis: your consent.
Website chat assistant
Messages you type into the chat assistant on our website are processed by our AI assistant service (hosted on Vercel, with AI provided by Anthropic) to answer your question. Please don't include personal information in chat messages.
10. Young learners
GreenLight Theory is designed for learner drivers aged 16 and over. We collect the minimum information needed, don't use advertising, and keep privacy settings protective by default.
11. Changes to this policy
We'll update this page if our practices change, and show the new date at the top. Significant changes will be highlighted in the app.
